Some of the pictures loom
large in my life. Some of
them grace it as well. It
would please me if some of
them managed to grace the
lives of others. I could hardly
wish for more. In fact, I don't.
Henry Holmes SmithPhoto by Jack Welpott
Henry Smith, perhaps more than any other teacher, was aware that photography went beyond "art" and is the very symbolic tape by which we measure our time. His accomplishments as a teacher have always arisen from an awareness that the photographic image is central to our visual language, and that literacy in this language is of tremendous sociopolitical importance.
This site is devoted to Henry's legendary teaching career and exploratory photography. The site is managed by his family and will be updated periodically with more pictures and information related to Henry. We welcome your comments and inquiries.
Death of Punch - 1975
Henry has always been a prolific reader and thinker, constantly seeking new connections and new questions. It is this questioning interaction that I remember most. For me, Henry was a walking "mind bomb." On occasions too numerous to mention, a passing comment would serve as a spark for an amazing explosion of ideas and possibilities.
